Van Driver’s Mate

Are you free on Thursdays and Fridays to help our van driver, Steve, move furniture in the local area?  Ideally, you need to be over 18, physically fit and able, enthusiastic, happy to get a bit dusty and good with people.  A good sense of humour would also be a big plus!  If you’re interested, please get in touch with our Volunteering Team on 01460 65214.

Home Visitors

We are currently looking for new Home Visitors, who are happy to go out to our adopted dog and cat’s new homes as a follow-up visit to see how they are getting on and settling in, and if there are any problems.  We are looking for people over the age of 18, happy to drive to locations, enthusiastic and caring, have good communication and people skills and can efficiently feed back news or concerns to the Sanctuary.  In particular, we are needing people to cover these areas: Beer, Bishopswood, Budleigh Salterton, Churchingford, Exeter, Glastonbury, Highbridge, Honiton, Ilchester, North Curry, Ottery St Mary, Quantocks, Shepton Mallet, Stoke Sub Hamdon, Taunton, Wellington and Wells.

If you are interested please call us on 01460 65214 and ask to speak to Gemma or Helen, our volunteer co-ordinators.

Visitor Centre Volunteers

Do you like meeting people and are friendly and open? Do you enjoy answering questions and sharing your passion for animals?  Are you happy to handle money? We are looking for volunteers for our brand new Visitor Centre, and our new on-site Ferne Animal Sanctuary Shop.  As a Visitor Centre volunteer you will be meeting, greeting and providing information about Ferne Animal Sanctuary to members of the public visiting us.  There will be the option to expand your role with additional training during our peak season. Ferne Shop volunteers will be advising and selling products to visitors from our on-site shop.

Dog Walking Volunteers

With our newly built kennels and rehoming centre we can take in up to 50 dogs at any one time so need a lot of help walking the dogs every day, particularly in the mornings. Please let us know if you can spare a little time, we’d love to hear from you.

Cat Socialisation Volunteers

If you love cats and can give some time to spend with our guests, please get in touch. Many of our cats love human attention and it gives them a sense of normality while they are with us. Do you have time to donate for cuddling, grooming and playing with the cats?

Cafe Volunteers

The Sanctuary is seeking volunteers who can donate some valuable time to the Sanctuary by helping out in our cafe. As part of the volunteer duties you will take orders and serve members of the public including selling ice creams, hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks and helping in the kitchen.  This volunteer role is great for gaining some catering experience.

Event Volunteers

A real hands on experience! We would not be able to run our events without the help of our volunteers. Our 2014 annual Family Fun Day was run by over 50 of our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who between them raised over £7000. These funds are essential to help us look after the 300+ animals who live at Ferne. Event volunteers can choose from a range of duties including being a car park steward, running stalls, helping in Pets Corner, assisting with children’s activities and supporting our catering staff. We do also need volunteers to help staff stalls outside supermarkets etc.

Charity Shop Volunteers

To assist in the Charity shops, advise and help customers, operate the till, sort stock and prepare for stock for sale. We currently have two charity shops in Chard and Ilminster.

Volunteer Estate Helpers

To assist in building and the maintenance of our 52 acres of beautiful countryside.  You could get involved in hedge laying, maintaining our sensory garden, painting and decorating or building a new duck shed!

Volunteer Home Visitors

To visit homes of cats and dogs which have been adopted from Ferne.  We are in need of help in Blandford Forum, Bridgwater, Budleigh Salterton, Burnham on Sea, Charmouth, Dawlish, East Coker, Exeter, Glastonbury, Ilchester, Kilmington, Merriot, North Curry, Ottery St Mary, Shepton Beauchamp, Stocklinch, Sturminster Newton, and Upottery. We do welcome all Volunteer home visitors, which ever area you live in.

Office Admin Volunteers

We always need help in our offices, please do get in touch if you need work experience in this area.  We can give you useful experience in customer care, marketing, accounting and other general office duties.

Do you fancy organising a fundraising event or activity – this could be organising a sponsored walk, a bake sale, dressing up silly at work or running a bingo night for example. Here is a link to our Just Giving page where people are fundraising right now for Ferne Animal Sanctuary.
